Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technology Policy

Jurnal Esensi Hukum recognizes the growing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in academic writing and research. This policy establishes clear guidelines for the acceptable and transparent use of AI tools in manuscripts submitted to this journal.

1. Definition

Generative AI refers to AI-powered tools that produce text, images, data analysis, or other content based on user prompts. This includes, but is not limited to, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and similar large language model (LLM)-based applications.

2. Permitted Use

Authors may use Generative AI tools for the following purposes:

  • Grammar checking, proofreading, and language editing to improve readability.
  • Paraphrasing or summarizing content that the author has already written.
  • Generating initial outlines or structural suggestions that the author substantially revises.
  • Literature search assistance, provided all cited sources are independently verified by the author.

3. Prohibited Use

The following uses of Generative AI are strictly prohibited:

  • Using AI-generated text as the primary or substantial content of a manuscript without significant intellectual contribution from the author.
  • Listing an AI tool as a co-author or contributor. AI tools cannot hold authorship because they cannot take responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the work.
  • Using AI to fabricate, falsify, or manipulate research data, citations, or references.
  • Submitting AI-generated content without disclosure to the editorial team.

4. Disclosure Requirement

Authors who use Generative AI tools in any part of their manuscript preparation must disclose this use. The disclosure must be included in the manuscript as a separate statement under the heading AI Use Disclosure, placed before the References section. The statement must specify:

  • The name of the AI tool used.
  • The purpose for which the tool was used.
  • The section(s) of the manuscript where the tool was applied.

Example disclosure statement: "During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool] for the purpose of [grammar checking / language editing / paraphrasing / literature search assistance]. The tool was applied to [specify section, e.g., the introduction and discussion sections]. After using this tool, the author(s) reviewed and revised the content as needed and take full responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the published work."

5. Author Responsibility

Authors remain fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, regardless of whether Generative AI tools were used in its preparation. This includes responsibility for the accuracy of facts, the validity of arguments, the originality of the work, and the correctness of all citations and references. The use of AI tools does not reduce or transfer this responsibility in any way.

6. Editorial Review and Consequences

The editorial team reserves the right to request clarification or additional evidence regarding the use of Generative AI in any submitted manuscript. Failure to disclose the use of AI tools as required under this policy, or any use of AI that violates the prohibited uses listed above, will be treated as a breach of publication ethics and may result in rejection of the manuscript or retraction of a published article, in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement.
