Authorship and Contributorship

Jurnal Esensi Hukum sets this policy so that every author name reflects real work on the manuscript. The policy applies to all submissions and all authors. The editors follow the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance on authorship.

Authorship criteria

A person qualifies as an author only when all four conditions apply:

  1. The person made a substantial intellectual contribution to the research design, the collection of legal materials or data, the analysis, or the interpretation.
  2. The person drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important content.
  3. The person approved the final version submitted for publication.
  4. The person agrees to answer for the accuracy and integrity of the whole work, including questions from the editors and readers.

A person who does not meet all four conditions must not appear as an author. Administrative support, funding, routine technical work, and a senior position do not justify authorship.

Corresponding author

Each manuscript names one corresponding author. This person speaks for all authors in communication with the editors. The corresponding author confirms that every author has read and approved the manuscript. The corresponding author enters the OJS metadata accurately. The corresponding author also confirms that no deserving contributor is missing and no undeserving person is listed.

Order of authors

The authors agree on the order of names before submission. The order reflects the size of each contribution. The editors do not decide the order.

Changes to the author list

  • Before acceptance: the corresponding author sends a written request to the editors. The request gives the reason for the change and includes written consent from every author, including anyone added or removed.
  • After acceptance: the editors do not accept new authors. A removal or a change in order takes effect only with written consent from all authors and from the Editor in Chief.
  • After publication: changes take effect only through a formal correction notice under the Retraction, Correction, and Post-Publication Discussion Policy.

The editors may reject any request that lacks the consent documents.

Contribution statement

The editors encourage authors to state each person's role using the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) framework. The roles include conceptualization, methodology, investigation, formal analysis, writing original draft, writing review and editing, supervision, and project administration. List each author's name, then the roles. Example: "A. B.: conceptualization, writing original draft." Place the statement at the end of the manuscript.

Acknowledgments

People who helped but do not meet the authorship criteria belong in the Acknowledgments section. Examples include technical help, language editing, scholarly discussion, and funding. Authors obtain consent before naming anyone. Give each person's full name and affiliation. Authors also name the funding body.

Unacceptable authorship practices

Esensi Hukum does not allow the following:

  • Guest authorship: listing a person who made no substantial contribution.
  • Gift or honorary authorship: granting authorship because of position, working relationship, or reputation.
  • Ghost authorship: leaving out a person who made a substantial contribution.
  • Purchased authorship: adding or selling authorship without a scholarly contribution.

The editors handle suspected cases under the Retraction, Correction, and Post-Publication Discussion Policy.

Artificial intelligence

An AI tool cannot be an author, because it cannot take responsibility for the work. Authors must disclose any use of AI tools in the manuscript, following the Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technology Policy. The human authors remain responsible for the originality, accuracy, and ethics of the content.

Authorship disputes

The editors do not decide who contributed what. Authors resolve disputes through their institution. The editors may pause the editorial process while a dispute is open. False, misleading, unauthorized, or disputed authorship information may lead to rejection of the manuscript, a correction, or retraction of the article.
